Shikakai consists of the whole dried pods of Senegalia rugata, whose widely used botanical synonym is Acacia concinna. Traditionally known as the fruit for hair or soap pod, Shikakai pods naturally contain plant saponins that release a mild cleansing solution when the pods are soaked, simmered or ground and mixed with water. These whole pods are cleaned, sorted and dried for use in external hair-wash preparations, herbal shampoo blends and cosmetic rinses.
